About us

THE FOUNDERS STORY - SPICE ROUTE COMMODITIES INDIA was born out of passion for tea by the founder. It is often seen that various teas are being sold in the market with a lot of hype and hoopla. However, when it comes to providing a good cup of tea, most brands miss the mark by a long shot. It is this gap that SPICE ROUTE aspires to fill and bring a good cup of tea to you, each and every time.

The founder, Faisal Ansari has a vast experience of 38 years in the world of tea manufacture, cultivation, and tasting, in India and abroad. Having worked for major tea companies such as McLeod Russel India Limited, James Warren Tea Limited, and Unilever Tea Tanzania Limited. it was now the time to devote to one's own calling. A qualified agriculturist, certified Auditor for Rainforest Alliance certification and ISO 22000 2005, as well as, a Trainer for World Class Manufacture.

An ardent biker, nature lover and a wildlife enthusiast by heart. Way back when biking was not fashionable, in 1993 he rode solo from Assam (Sonitpur) via Nepal and Bhutan to Uttarakhand (Dehradun) on a Hero Honda CD 100, un-aided and without any sponsor or backup. A huge feat by any standards.

Wildlife rescue comes to him naturally and on many occasion he has successfully rescued and released animals. (Pics in gallery) In his long tenure in the tea industry he was fully involved in the cultivation, manufacture, tasting, blending, packing and selling of teas as also in creating sustainable methods for the safety of the tea produced as well as the workers in the tea indsutry.

The Founder - Faisal Ansari

It was during this period he discovered that the blends he made for his friends were highly appreciated than the usual “run of the mill” branded teas available in the market. This inspired and motivated him to come up with the idea of reaching fresh and good quality teas to the tea lovers, blended in his own unique style and offer it to all who enjoy the taste of this magical brew.

Good Quality Tea sourcing is the first step towards making a great “Cup of Tea”, with an in-depth knowledge of the industry this has been made possible. Most tea labels in the market are being produced by business oriented people with little or no knowledge on how tea is grown, produced blended and what goes into making a good tea cup great. Faisal here has an upper hand, as he has literally grown up with the tea plant. Having joined the tea industry in 1985 at the young age of 20 something, he recently decided to quit the job and start “Spice Route Commodities” to serve the people.

Having travelled across the best spice growing areas in the Northeast and the South, Spice Route aims to exploit his experience and in-depth knowledge to continue to introduce the best teas, coffees, spices and other products for the discerning consumer.

Story Behind The Name - Spice Route Commodities India Indian spices are known to be some of the best in the world. Back in the day, when the people of the western world tasted these , they fell in love with our tea and spices, and thus began the search for the ‘Land of Spices”, until the day when they arrived in India at a port in Kerala. The Portuguese followed by the Dutch, were among the first to set foot on the Coromondal coast and conquered Kochi.

As we all know, the Tea from Assam and Darjeeling, and Black Pepper and Cardamom produced in Kerala are the best in the world. The Westerners did not waste time and seized the opportunity, quickly establishing a trade route for the spices extending the pre-existing Silk Route and Incense Route.

Due to its strategic location, the town of Idukki and Kochi in Kerala quickly started gaining revenue from the spices they grew. Since these were located on the bank of the ocean, transportation by way of the ships was easy. It opened a gateway for Europe to obtain the spices from India.

Technically the “SPICE ROUTE” was not a dedicated route only for transportation of spice, but it was more of a hub of the network of the trade route already existing. However, this particular node was explicitly for Spices, Tea and other related goods. The merchant ships and sometimes even the Royal Navy Ships as well, were used for transporting this valuable cargo from India to the west, and popularly came to be known as the “Spice Route”

The brand name here, is to honour, and celebrate the fact that our country continues to be one of the best producer of SPICES and TEA, across the world.

Assam, well known as the producer of the best quality CTC style black tea, and Darjeeling for Orthodox style black tea, have since been awarded the GI tag due to the unique quality not found anywhere else in the world. In recent years Green Tea too has become popular. Today, both Assam and Darjeeling are producing high quality of the Green Tea. Some of the Green Tea is hand made by small farmers and not easily available to the connoisseur’s and lovers of tea. It will be our endeavour to bring the best to your table.

Spice Route Commodities will stay committed to bring the best products to it consumers with consistent quality.
